How To Make Better Decisions (No Matter What You're Facing)
There are a few things I've learned about making better decisions, and they're not from books or articles. They're from my own experience. They've helped me get past the stress of making a big decision and move on to the next one.
1. See the bigger picture
The first step to making better decisions is taking a step back and seeing the big picture. Take a few minutes to think about what your decision will mean, not just in the short-term but also in the long term. Consider how this decision will affect others besides you and your family, too, but take care not to become paralysed by overthinking it.
The best way to approach the big picture is to ask yourself a question. I like this one: "What's the end goal?" In most cases, there will be an answer that can help you narrow down your options and decide which one is best for you.
2. Don't get stuck in all-or-nothing thinking
When we make decisions, especially those that affect our future, it's easy to get stuck in all-or-nothing thinking.
Under pressure, many of us tend to think in terms of extremes and absolutes - "I have to do this or else!". We also magnify the negative aspects and minimize our strengths - "There's no way I can succeed". It seems like once you've made a choice, it's set in stone and there's no going back - but that's not true!
The reality is that there are no final decisions in life. You can always change your mind if you find yourself making a bad call.
And it's important to remember that none of us are perfect, and sometimes we make mistakes. But when it comes to decision-making, it's important not to get stuck in a rut. If you find yourself making decisions that aren't good for you or others around them, don't be afraid to change your mind.
3. Don't overthink
When you're faced with a decision, don't overthink it. Don't second-guess yourself. Don't let fear of failure hold you back and don't let fear of regret keep you from taking action. And especially, don't let fear of change hold you back from doing what will make your life better or happier overall.
Make a list of your options then write down all the benefits of each option on one side of your paper and all the downsides on the other side. Then, compare them against each other.
The key here is to be confident in yourself and your abilities to make sound decisions without worrying too much about what could go wrong or if it's the right choice for everyone involved (because sometimes it isn't).
4. Trust yourself
There are a lot of reasons to trust yourself, including your:
Instincts. Do you have a feeling that something is wrong?
Gut. Is it in your gut (or heart) to go along with the plan?
Experience. Have you been there before? If so, what happened and how did it turn out?
Ability. Can you do it? Are your skills up to the task at hand?
Knowledge/education/background/etc.. Do people seem to know what they're talking about when they advise against doing something - and if so, can you find out why their advice makes sense for them and for others who chose differently than you did in similar situations in the past (or will soon)?
In the end, it's all about what you feel is right for yourself and your family or business. If your intuition is telling you something, listen to it: the feeling will likely turn out to be true.
